With over a century of service to the City of Schenectady, the Schenectady Rotary has deepened its commitment to supporting education. In 2023, the club embarked on a mission to bolster educational initiatives in the city. One significant project emerged from this dedication: the transformation of Keane Elementary school Community Resource Room. Let’s delve into this inspiring endeavor.
The project aimed to enhance Keane Elementary School’s facilities to better serve its students and families. As part of the broader Community School approach, the Community Resource Room would offer vital resources and support. Keane Elementary, located in the heart of the city and designated for special attention due to its Receivership status, was the ideal site for this initiative.
The Community Room serves as a dedicated space within the school for families to access various resources tailored to their needs. By providing a holistic support system, the project aims to foster academic and social-emotional growth among students. With an enrollment of nearly 300 students, the impact of this initiative extends to the entire Keane community.
The success of the project relied on collaborative efforts. Partnerships were forged with local businesses, organizations, and the Schenectady City School District. Together, they raised funds, coordinated logistics, and contributed resources to bring the project to fruition. Rotary members actively engaged with the Keane community, building relationships through various initiatives including:
- Volunteering at the Back to School Barbecue
- Donating costumes at Trunk or Treat
- Reading with students
- Providing warm, winter coats
- Establishing an after school tutoring program
Fundraising efforts kicked off with the “Cornhole for a Cause” tournament in partnership with Adirondack Cornhole League, in July 2023 drawing over 200 participants and garnering generous donations. Construction planning commenced in fall 2023, with Rotary members, school administrators, and parent liaisons collaborating on the project scope and timeline. Thanks to the support of local businesses and skilled volunteers, the Community Room underwent a significant transformation.
Special thank yous to Creative Material Corporation, Home Instead, Alliance Laundry Systems, The Home Depot Foundations, Quinlan’s Construction Services, LLC, Central Plumbing and Heating/Moen, the Facilities team at the Schenectady Central School District, and Rotary members who spend countless hours coordinating and providing hands-on labor to complete this project.
